Joint, back or limb pain
New pain or difficulty moving? I examine the painful area and assess whether self-care, medication, rehabilitation or further tests are needed.
Examination guides treatment
An injection is not the default treatment for joint pain. Symptoms, examination findings and underlying conditions guide the decision. Mention injuries, previous investigations and your medicines.
When might a joint or corticosteroid injection help?
For uncomplicated back pain without warning signs, a physiotherapist can also be an appropriate first contact. Imaging is not routinely needed.
When is urgent assessment needed?
A hot, swollen and very painful joint, especially with fever, or deformity or inability to bear weight after injury needs urgent assessment. Back pain with new urinary retention, numbness around the saddle area or progressive muscle weakness needs immediate assessment. Call 116117 for advice on where to go, or 112 in an emergency.
